Where is Orissa ?

October 9th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Is Orissa South India or North India ? Well, Lonely Planet seemed to think it was not part of South India in 1998 edition. So, I turned over to LP North India 2005 edition on the shelf to look up some travel info, only to realize that Orissa was moved to South India sometime between 1998-2005 ! :)

Anyway, the newer edition of LP South India sucks. I cannot believe the folks at LP halved the size and squeezed an additional state in - No wonder I did’nt even find Karwar mentioned when I tried to look up some info on it coupla days back !

Slowly , but surely, I’m back on the road again. After places around Karnataka in September & October, (November being taken up by bro visiting India), December shall take me to Hampi & Orissa. Can I also dream about Rajasthan in March ? A visit to almamater would’nt be so bad. And then Himalayas when summer arrives :-p

Try the Rough Guide for South India. Much better than LP. Even they have included Orissa along with South India guide. LP somehow feels as though it is written keeping Israelis in mind..!

Is Orissa North India or South India? That’s something I wondered myself while I was there… By the way, the second edition of LP South India (2001) included Orissa. Was thinking of getting the newest edition but now that I read your post, I’ll think again.

Isabel, Orissa has found a new identity :) It is part of North East India. I picked up the guide a while ago..yet to go fully go through it, but it covers Orissa, West Bengal & North eastern states in good detail..
